Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a constituent of KIIT University, have successfully performed a bypass heart surgery through lateral thoractomy approach.

The patient, a 59-year-old resident of Palashpanga of Keonjhar district, was suffering from left main coronary artery disease, a KIIT release said today.

After admission in KIMS hospital, a team of doctors including Dr Bana Bihari Mishra, Dr Ashok Badamalick and Dr D. Senapati performed the rare operation through lateral thoractomy approach over the weekend, it said.

This is believed to be first such surgery successfully performed in Odisha, it claimed.

Commonly, this kind of surgery is done through sternotomy approach, where chances of infection, mobility and mortality are very high. However, lateral thoractomy approach excludes these risks, the release said.

In yet another instance of providing immediate and efficient health service to the public, KIMS saved a heart patient in a serious condition by providing timely shock therapy. The 45-year-old patient from Baranga area was admitted to KIMS recently after suffering from a heart attack. Shock Therapy was performed on the patient who recovered.

Dr Achyut Samanta, Founder of KIIT & KIMS congratulated the doctors who performed the operation through lateral thoractomy approach and the other group of doctors who saved a life.
