The over 40 feet high effigy of 10-headed demon king Ravana was burnt at the 'Ravanapora Maidan' here in West Midnapore district this afternoon in the presence of an estimated 50,000 strong crowd.

MP Sisir Adhikary set ablaze the effigy triggering wide jubilation as the occasion marked the triumph of good over evil.

There was a spectacular fire works display as the effigy was in flames, also marking the end of Bijoya Dashami and the beginning of 20-day-long wait for Diwali, festival of lights, to celebrate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after killing the demon king.

There was tight security arrangements at the Kharagpur function, considered to be the biggest Dussehra celebrations in West Bengal, also attended by several senior officials.
