Uttarakhand Chief minister Harish Rawat conducted a surprise inspection of police deployment along the city's main thoroughfares and other law and order arrangements here.

Rawat was on his way back from Haridwar at 1.30 AM last night when he had his convoy diverted from EC Road to Dalanwala and went up to Dilaram chowk after driving through MDDA, Bhagat Singh Colony, Raipur police station and Sahasradhara crossing to take stock of law and order arrangements in these areas, an official release said today.

He also gave a dressing down to police officials on phone when he found inadequate deployment of personnel on some of the main squares and thoroughfares.

He rang up the SSP and asked him to ensure regular night patrol in the city and transportation of homeless people found on the roads to 'Rain Baseras' (night shelters) to save them from cold.

Rawat also asked policemen on duty to intensify checking of vehicles at night to stop drunken driving and other dubious activities.
