Rawat for modernisation of jails, new items in prison canteens

Emphasising on the use of state-of-the-art safety tools in the jails of Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Harish Rawat has ordered steps for the modernisation of prisons in the state.

Rawat was reviewing conditions of jails in the state in consultation with senior officials here yesterday, an official release here said.

"The most modern safety tools should be used in all state jails as security of the prisons should be our topmost priority," he said.

The Chief Minister also asked jailers and Chief Development Officers in the areas to establish better co-ordination among themselves and introduce local produce and popular hill cuisines and delicacies in the menus of jail canteens.
 

Ordering immediate steps for the modernisation of all the jails in the state especially the ones in Sitarganj, Haridwar and Dehradun, he said DPRs in this regard be prepared and submitted through the Chief Secretary.

He also asked jail officials to prepare detailed self-employment programmes for inmates depending on their aptitudes.

The review meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Shatrughna Singh, Chief Principal Secretary Rakesh Sharma, Principal Secretary Power Umakant Panwar and Secretary Home and Prisons Vinod Sharma.
