RBI for special force to guard banks' currency chests in Guj

"We are examining a proposal to set up a dedicated security force for guarding currency chests of banks in Gujarat. The proposal is at a very preliminary stage," Regional Director of RBI, Sudarshan Sen, told PTI.

There are 272 currency chests of various banks across Gujarat where currency notes are stored and the proposal for a special force was mooted after banks faced problem in getting adequate police security on demand from the state, according to sources.

When asked for comment on the issue, DGP Chittranjan Singh said a decision on special force would be taken after banks submit a proposal to the effect.

 

"Banks will submit a proposal regarding setting up of a dedicated police force for them to the government. A decision will be taken after submission of the proposal," he said.

According to Sudarshan Sen, the proposed security force could be on the lines of ONGC's dedicated battalion for its installations.

The proposal moved in this connection earlier had stated that RBI and banks could jointly pay for an exclusive security force.
