Attacking the Centre for re-promulgating the land ordinance for the third time, the CPI today said that the government's move is a challenge to the Parliamentary democracy at a time when the bill was under the scrutiny of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

"Legislation on the land bill has been referred to a JPC for further scrutiny. Why should the Government come up with a third ordinance?...It is a challenge to Parliamentary democracy and the instrument of participation," CPI National Secretary D Raja said.

Terming the Government's decision as "deplorable", he accused the Centre of helping some vested interests.

"On the one hand the Prime Minister says that the legislation is not a matter of life or death for him and on the other hand it (legislation) is with the JPC...Why should the Government push the anti-farmer bill?" the Rajya Sabha member asked.

Failing to convert the Land Acquisition Bill into an Act due to number crunch in Rajya Sabha, the government had recently re-promulgated the land ordinance for the third time even as the JPC deliberated on the contentious legislation at length for the first time on May 29.
