A total of 33,000 displaced Reangs, now sheltered in six evacuee camps in Tripura's North district, today demanded from the Governor status like Kasmiri Pandits or Tamil refugees for a better living.
This demand was made in a written memorandum submitted to Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya when he visited the Naisinghpara evacuee camp in Kanchanpur subdivision today.
Handing over the memorandum, President of Mizo Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF), A Swaibunga stated that the camp inmates were facing acute crisis of drinking water, proper accommodation and their children were deprived of facilities of education and electricity in the camp.

MBDPF also demanded work under MGNREGA for the inmates and old-age pension for the aged and all other facilities given to the 'primitive tribal group' as the Reangs fall under the category.
Governor in his speech in a small function said, "Hope good times come soon. It would be my moral duty to send a report to the central government and recommend for change of your life in the camps and expedite your return to your home with dignity."
The displaced people had taken shelter in six evacuee camps since 1997 following ethnic clashes with Mizos in neighbouring Mizoram over the possession of land and saving their identity.
