Slamming the Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief for his remarks that the party was committed to protecting the special status granted to the state by Article 370, an MLA has argued that the provision was supposed to have been a temporary one.

"(Saifuddin Soz's) statement that Congress is committed to retaining Article 370 is surprising... Such utterances are confusing," former union minister and rebel BJP MLA, Chaman Lal Gupta said here today.

J-K state Congress president Saifuddin Soz had recently said his party was not only committed to retaining Article 370, but also in favour of enlarging its scope.

Article 370 is a temporary provision which, when incorporated in the Constitution, gave rise to a lot of resentment, Gupta said.

Gupta alleged that Congress never had a Kashmir policy, which was the main reason behind many problems affecting the state.

He added, the 'autonomy' had been exploited by men in power, be it National Conference or Congress, and added that the people of J-K have suffered due to it.
