Record power demand in Delhi

The searing heat today pushed the power demand in the city to over 4,900 mega watt, the highest of the year.

"The maximum power demand was recorded at 4,949 MW in the city today, breaching yesterday's record demand of 4,751 MW," a power department official said.

The rise in power demand triggered outages in many areas of city for upto three hours and people had a difficult time with mercury soaring to 45.1 degrees Celsius, the highest of the season.

Last year, maximum power demand had gone beyond 5,600 MW. The demand is likely to break last year's record.

Long power cuts were reported from various localities in North and West Delhi.
