The state transport department will verify the background of around 500 drivers before they are recruited to ply the vehicles which will be hired for the forthcoming Lusofonia Games scheduled in November.

Over 550 vehicles will be hired by the department for the games to ferry VIPs, sportsmen and other guests, director of transport Arun Desai told reporters yesterday.

The drivers would be absorbed into service only after their criminal background is cross checked by the department, which is responsible for the transport arrangements for the Portuguese Commonwealth Games.

The department has already floated tender for 550 air conditioned vehicles including 450 cars and 80 buses with 45 seats each and another 30 buses with 14-35 seating capacity. Those winning the contract will have to provide drivers for the vehicles, Desai said.

The vehicles will also go through a screening and mechanical checks before okaying it for the event, he added.

The state-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited will also deploy 100 buses to ferry spectators to the stadiums.
