A member of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis had to remove the red beacon from his official vehicle following complaints that he was not eligible to use the facility as per the Supreme Court guidelines.

Commission member Gopal Krishan Sahotra today visited Haryana's Ambala to hear grievances of safai karamcharis (sanitary workers) at the Panchayat Bhavan here. The Ambala deputy commissioner, deputy commissioner of police and the sub-divisional magistrate accompanied him.

Later during a press meet, some mediapersons pointed out that the commission member was not entitled to use red beacon.

Sahrotra said he was recently appointed to the commission and he was not aware of the rules. He claimed that the Karnal administration had provided the red beacon-fitted car to him for touring nearby districts to hear problems of safai karamcharis.

He said that it was the duty of the Karnal administration to look into the legality before offering him the car with red beacon. Later, the red beacon was removed.
