The sessions court today cancelled the interim protection from arrest granted to alleged oil and red sanders mafia Mohammed Ali in connection with seizure of red sanders worth Rs 9 crore off Mumbai coast.

"The court has cancelled the interim protection and disposed of his anticipatory bail application terming it infructuous," said public prosecutor Iqbal Solkar.

Ali had sought pre-arrest bail on Saturday through his lawyer but by the time the application came up for hearing, he had already been arrested.

"Ali's application came up for hearing at around 12:30 pm on Saturday but the police today submitted the documents that showed he was arrested two hours before that," said Solkar.

Mumbai Police's crime branch had moved the application seeking cancellation of his interim protection, saying Ali had suppressed this fact from the court.

The crime branch today also filed an application before the metropolitan magistrate seeking his custody in the case. The order is likely to be passed tomorrow.

On Sunday, the local metropolitan magistrate's court had refused to send Ali in police custody after he told the court that he had got an interim protection from the sessions court. The magistrate instead had sent him to judicial custody till December 19.

In a joint operation by the Coast Guard and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, 23 tonnes of red sanders worth Rs 9 crore were seized on Friday while it was being smuggled to Dubai by a dhow. The agencies handed over the 20 persons, who were arrested on the sea, to the crime branch.

Mohammed Ali had earlier been arrested in a case related to murder of rival oil mafia. He is suspected to have links with underworld gangs.
