Lt Governor Kiran Bedi has asked the state PWD department to refrain from adopting the 'unhealthy practice of manual cleaning of drains.'
A Raj Nivas release said today that at the end of her weekend visits to various pockets to inspect maintenance of drains, she visited the sites around Puducherry town limits
She wanted to know progress of work in maintenance of drains taken up by PWD since her last visits', it said, addig that Bedi had asked PWD officials to reform from adopting 'unhealthy practice of manual cleaning of the drains'.

PWD officials told her that machines were being deployed for n most of the work to clean drains and wherever deployment of machinery was needed it would be done without delay.
They said PWD would also outsource cleaning work to see that silt and garbage clogging the drains were removed.
She asked supervisors of PWD, Municipality and Swachchta Corporation to work with residents welfare associations and d motivate people to segregate garbage at source.
On return to Raj Nivas, she flagged off a 'Glaucoma walk' at Bharathi park conducted by JIPMER in association with Aravind Eye Hospital to highlight the need for preventing glaucoma and to save eye sight on 'World Glaucoma Day'.
