Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd (RDEL) will seek shareholders' nod to rechristen itself as Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd.

The change of name is in line with the company's focus on building capabilities for the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard, Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd (RDEL) said in a statement today.

"Reliance Infrastructure-controlled Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd (RDEL) is all set to change its name to Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd (RNEL)," it said.

The company said it will seek shareholders' approval for change of name at the annual general meet (AGM) on August 22.

RDEL was earlier known as Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company Ltd. The Reliance group acquired the controlling stake in Pipavav Defence in 2016 and renamed it as Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd, the statement said.

"The company has also submitted bids for Rs 30,000-crore order, including Landing Platform Dock (LPD) and Anti- Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) for the Indian Navy. Bids are expected to be opened in September 2017," the statement said.

The firm is engaged in the business of construction, repair, refit and refurbishment of various naval vessels for the Navy and the Coast Guard, apart from commercial shipbuilding.
