Relief operations on in UP, major rivers in spate

Relief and rescue operations today continued in full swing in the flood affected areas of Uttar Pradesh where major rivers are still flowing above the red mark at several places in the state.

Situation in Ballia, Mirzapur among other areas continued to remain grim with 224 and 374 villages, respectively in these two districts, badly affected by the flood waters, relief commissioner's office here said.

A population of 2,73,600 in Ballia and 5,13,304 in Mirzapur has been hit due to floods, it said, adding that in Gazipur 24 villages and in Varanasi 85 villages are still affected.

River Ganga was flowing 2.335 mts above the danger mark at Ballia and 1.405 mts above the red mark at Gazipur.
 

Sharda was flowing .380 mts above the red mark at Palia Kalan, Ghaghra .215 mts above the mark at Turtipar, Burhi Rapti .665 mts above the red mark at Kakrahi and Quano .680 mts above at Gonda.

Met office said with the south-west monsoon being normal over east UP, few places in the area received moderate to rather heavy rainfall while light showers occurred at some places in the western districts.

Chief amount of rainfall recorded in cms are: Bansi-9; Birdghat-8; Kakrahi; Regoli-7 each, Gorakhpur-6; Pharenda; Rasra-5 each; Balrampur, Bansgaon-4 each, Hata, Tarabganj, Khalilabad-3 each.
