The remarks invited a sharp retort from the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh which said the BSP leaders had lost control over themselves after they were rejected by the people at the hustings.
"Mulayam Singh Yadav is now old and because of this he makes mistake. Even while casting vote in the Presidential election he voted for P A Sangma instead of Pranab Mukherjee," BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya told reporters in Jalaun.
"Under the circumstances he is hoping to become the Prime Minister of the country... He is day-dreaming," said Maurya, the Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha.
In Lucknow, SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary, reacting sharply to Maurya's remarks, said he should think many times before making any comment on a prominent and respected leader like Mulayam.
"After being thrown out of power, the BSP leaders are so frustrated that they have no control over what they say," he said.
"Those who are commenting on the SP leader and on the working of the state government are the ones who are facing charges of corruption and are not liking the transparency in the present government," Chaudhary said.
"Scams related to the previous BSP governmment are coming to light every day. As the heat of the probe is reaching the former Chief Minister (Mayawati), they are opposing the SP government," he said.
