The Congress today welcomed the Supreme Court verdict in the Nirbhaya case saying everyone should strive to build an environment that makes women feel safe and secure.
Citing NCRB figures, the party said crimes against women are on the rise in the country and asked the government when it would be able to improve the law and order situation so that women feel secure.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi said justice has been delivered four years after the heart-breaking gangrape-and- murder case that agonised the soul of India.
"I feel deeply for the courageous family of this brave daughter of India, who rose to become a symbol of every woman's fight against sexual violence," she said in a statement.
She also said the December-16 gangrape case, on which the Supreme Court delivered its verdict today, is a reminder to all to work tirelessly toward building a safe and secure environment for women.
Gandhi also said it is the right of every daughter of India to lead a life of dignity, pride, respect and equality and "it is for all of us to ensure that she gets it".
At the AICC briefing, party spokesperson Kapil Sibal cited the National Crime Records Bureau figures for 2016 to attack the government.
"The state of affairs in our cities is such that crime against women was on the rise and Delhi emerged as the number one among various states.
"When will the law and order situation improve and who will make women secure and safe? What steps will the government take in this regard," he told reporters.
Sibal said 184 women per lakh population in Delhi were subjected to some kind of attacks.
Sibal expressed hope that the family of the victim would get some relief and solace after the verdict.
AICC incharge of communications department Randeep Surjewala said justice has been delivered in the heart- wrenching Nirbhaya case, but said certain questions remain.
"Are we doing enough to ensure that the ugly nightmare never returns?"
Surjewala said as per records, still six women are raped daily in the national capital and asked why only 20 out of 660 'One Stop Centres' have been set up yet.
He also asked why the Rs 1,000 crore Nirbhaya fund was not utilised to ensure safety for women.
