The production of renowned double wrapper cigars manufactured in Woraiyur, once the capital of the Chozha Kingdom, is witnessing a slowdown.

Sanku Pillai, who had embarked upon manufacture of double wrapper cigars said that the once over 3000 persons were engaged in its production and now it has come down to 100.

Sanku Pillai claimed that his maternal uncle Natarajan Pillai had even made cigar to the length of 24inches that created a record. It is believed that these cigars from Woraiyur do not create any bad odour.

In earlier days, leaves were supplied from Cooch Bihar and the buds from Aravakurichi near Karur.

Sanku Pillai requested both the state and Central governments to work out a solution and provide a fillip to the industry.
