The insurgent outfit came into being in 1993 and continued its bush war for a 'free Tripura' for about two decades and demanded deportation of the people who entered Tripura after October 15, 1949 as cut-off year. October 15, 1949 is the day Tripura formally joined the Indian Union and emerged as an Union Territory. Intelligence sources said the insurgent leader was said to have business ventures in transport and garment industries in Bangladesh for which he accumulated capital by collecting ransom from kidnapped persons and lived a lavish life in the neighbouring country. Official sources said after the Awami League government came to power in Bangladesh, it launched security actions and busted many camps in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and Sylhet.
