German weekly Der Spiegel reports that US intelligence agencies hacked into the email servers of Chinese tech giant Huawei amid concerns the company was a threat to US national security.

Citing documents leaked by Edward Snowden, Der Spiegel reports the National Security Agency began targeting Huawei in early 2009 and quickly succeeded in gaining access to the company's email archive, lists of clients and source codes for its products.

Huawei makes telecommunications equipment for cellphone and data networks.

In 2012, the House Intelligence Committee recommended that Huawei be barred from doing business in the US because its equipment could enable Chinese intelligence services to tamper with American communications networks.

Der Spiegel's report Saturday claims the NSA operation was conducted together with the CIA and FBI.
