Mangan the district headquarters of the North district is still cut off from the state capital because of a large landslide that occurred yesterday, official sources said.

Rescue teams comprising personnel of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and state government are finding it difficult to reach remote areas of North Sikkim as huge debris caused by landslides have blocked the roads, they said.

Bad weather is hampering helicopters from making sorties in the area, they said.

There is no drinking water and electricity in Chungthang. The road from Chungthang to Lachen is blocked at 36 places and there are multiple landslides from Chungthang to Lachen village, the sources said.

Given the inaccessibility and the bad weather conditions choppers are trying to make sorties to drop essential commodities to Chungthang.

The helicopter carrying Sikkim chief secretary Karma Gyatso also could not land due to bad weather.

The army is also trying to fly choppers but apart from a few recee sorties, the rescue work is proving difficult.

Meanwhile, the local panchayt and locals of the area cremated four bodies at Chungthang itself as they had started decomposing.
