Rescued elephant calf dies

The sick elephant calf which was rescued by forest officials from Pandakhol jungle near Gajalabadi in Odisha's Ganjam district, succumbed its illness today.

The two-year-old male elephant calf was suspected to have died due to infection and dehydration.

"Despite all efforts with timely treatment, the elephant calf died," said divisional forest officer (Ghumusar South) B K Acharya.

The exact cause of the death would be ascertained only after post-mortem, he said.

During routine patrolling, forest officials found the sick elephant calf lying near a nullah yesterday. The calf might be part of a herd of 12 elephants, which was roaming in the area, forest officials said.
