Institutions devoted to research in the country needed to be imbued with a culture of excellence in order that they may produce significant results through their endeavours, former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam said today.

Addressing school students at the event, 'Innovations in Science Pursuits for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)', Kalam said, "For promoting research, we have to inject the culture of excellence in all our engineering institutions. Excellence does not come by accident, it is a process through which one continuously strives to better oneself."

The former president also advised the students to develop a scientific temper.

"Science gives you better eyes because science can remove the mental blindfolds and it gives your brain a challenge to solve many scientific problems that are yet to be solved," he added.

He also appealed to students to try and set their goals in life before turning 20 years of age, saying that would help them build a great base for themselves.

"How does achievement come? There are four proven steps: having an aim in life before 20 years of age, acquiring knowledge continuously, working hard towards the aim and having perseverance to defeat the problem and succeed," Kalam said.
