The number of seats reserved for women in Goa buses would be doubled and the reservation rule would be strictly implemented from tomorrow.

State Transport Director Arun Desai told reporters here that the increase in number of reserved seats for women would come to effect from International Womens' Day.

The decision to enhance the number of seats was taken in the State Transport Authority (STA) meeting, held on Tuesday.

The state government has decided to strictly implement the reservation rule in all the private and state government run buses.

Desai said a fine of Rs 100 each would be imposed on the passenger and conductor, if a male is found to be occupying seat reserved for women.

According to the new guidelines, eight seats would be reserved for women in 37 seater buses while 12 will be reserved in bigger buses.

The transport department has decided to commission special enforcement teams to verify whether the rule is followed or not.
