Respite from cold conditions in Leh

Residents in Leh town of Ladakh region today got respite from intense cold conditions as the mercury there rose by over six degrees, even as there was improvement in the night temperature at most places in Kashmir.

Leh recorded a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius up by over six notches from the previous night's low of minus 9.2 degrees Celsius, an official of the Meteorological Department here said.

He said the nearby Kargil town was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir as the mercury there settled at minus 8.6 degrees Celsius compared to minus 7.1 degrees Celsius the previous night.
 

The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter, was the coldest place in the Valley as it shivered at a low of minus 6 degrees Celsius the official said.

He said the night temperature at the resort was up by over two notches from the previous night's minus 8.5 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registered a low of minus 0.1 degree Celsius same as that of the previous night, the official said.

The night temperature at Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra during summer, settled at a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius against the minimum of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said.

He said Qazigund and Kokernag towns, also in south Kashmir, were the other places in the Valley where the mercury went up.

While Qazigund recorded the minimum of 2.4 degrees Celsius, the mercury in Kokernag settled at a low of 1.6 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir, which had witnessed a low of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius the previous night, registered minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, the official said.

The Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy weather in the state from tomorrow.

There are chances of another spell of wet weather later this week, the official said.
