An NGO today demanded the Centre and Himachal Pradesh government to restore the old Hindustan-Tibet road as an all weather alternative for the tribal people of Kinnaur district in the state.

"The road is not only vital for people of Kinnaur but also a strategic road from defence point of view," president of Social Welfare Council Rajeshwar Negi said.

All the forest roads which served as link roads to the old HT road should be opened and properly maintained in border areas, he said.

In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and state Chief Minister, the NGO demanded restoration of the Old Hindustan Tibet road passing through Kinnaur as an alternate all weather road.

He said immediate steps were required to restore the NH-22 at Tapri-Urni and Choling.
