Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje today said preserving and restoring the Jaisalmer Fort, made famous by Satyajit Ray by his film 'Sonar Kella' (Golden Fortress), was important but this was not just an issue of tourism.

"This is not just about an issue of tourism. You have to think about the people living in the area, actually thousands," she said in reply to a question at the Ficci Ladies Organisation interactive session on 'empowering women.'

The fort which got its sobriquet Golden Fortress from yellow limestone, the material it was made of, is a must see for tourists from West Bengal as Sonar Kella (1974) was one of the most popular films of Ray.

Admitting that she had not seen the children's detective movie, starring Dadasaheb Phalke winner Soumitra Chatterjee, Raje said "I wish to buy a DVD during my visit to Kolkata."

"That whole area is under preservation. INTACH is working on it, other people are working on it. People living in the area need to be sensitised," Raje said

The Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is a non-profit organisation to protect and conserve India's vast natural, built and cultural heritage.
