In a bid to check accidents during fireworks display, Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), has put in certain restrictions, including the use of certain materials during display.

The restrictions come in the backdrop of Puttingal temple tragedy in which 108 persons were killed and over 200 injured in April during a fireworks display wherein certain banned substances were used.

PESO has made it clear that during festivities, fireworks should not contain chlorate or prohibited explosives.

In a series of circulars, PESO, stated that no fireworks within 250 metres of a hospital, nursing home and schools will be allowed.

It has also prohibited possession and sale of fire crackers generating noise level exceeding permissible limits.

The organisers displaying fireworks also have to take permission from concerned district magistrate about the time and place at which public display is to be held, list type of fireworks that will be be used for display and also stated the nature of composition, dimension and weight of the crackers, PESO sources said.

A minimum distance of 100 metres should be maintained between spectators and area where the display is to be carried out.

The temple festival season, including the famous Thrissoor pooram, are to be held in a couple of months.
