A retired civil surgeon and his assistant were arrested for allegedly violating the PNDT Act after a joint team of the district health department and the local police raided his ultrasound centre here today.
As per a complaint by Mohali District Family Welfare Officer (DFWO) Usha Rani, Hartej clinic and ultrasound centre owned by Rajinder Singh Saggu and assisted by Mohinder Kaur was conducting sex determination tests.
Acting on the complaint, the joint team of the health and police departments comprising the DFWO and Kharar SMO H S Obroi was formed and a decoy patient was sent to the aforementioned clinic with Rs 12,000.

The team immediately swooped on the ultrasound centre and recovered Rs 10,000 from Saggu and Rs 2,000 from his assistant.
The police said there was no entry of the decoy patient's ultrasound in the PNDT register maintained at the centre, adding the ultrasound centre has been sealed.
Kharar police has registered a case under relevant sections of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act against the suspects.
