A 70-year-old woman, who was a retired employee of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was today found dead at her home in east Delhi, police said.

The incident came to light when the tenant of victim Sumanbala Bhatnagar found her lying dead on her bed at around 3 pm at her home in Chitra Vihar area, police said.

The suspects had gained a friendly entry in the house to commit robbery, the police said, adding that they have seized footage of the CCTV installed in the area to ascertain the identity of assailants.

A case of murder and robbery has been lodged at the Preet Vihar police station.

"Sumanbala Bhatnagar stayed alone on ground floor of her two-storey building after her husband, also a retired officer of the MEA, passed away a few years ago. Her son works in Chennai while her two daughters live in different parts of east Delhi," the police said.

It said that first floor of Bhatnagar's house was rented out and today when her tenant called the victim on her phone, she did not respond.

When her tenant came down to see Bhatnagar, she found that the doors were open and the victim had died, the police said, adding that she was allegedly strangled and had also suffered injuries on her head.

Her tenant informed the police after which Bhatnagar was rushed to the nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The police said some articles were found missing from the victim's house.
