Two persons have been arrested for the murder of an elderly woman in Jammu allegedly for money, police said today.

Rahat Hafiz and Sohail were arrested yesterday for the murder of Nargis Hazi (61), a retired teacher, Jammu SSP Atul Goel told reporters here today.

Nargis, wife of Shahid Chauhan, of Gali Mohalla Baba Jivan Shah area in Shahidi Chowk (Jammu), had given Rs 18 lakh to her relative Hafiz to buy a plot as she wanted to sell off her house, the SSP said.

Hafiz did not buy the plot and failed to repay the amount. When she started demanding her money back, Hafiz hatched a plan to murder her, the officer said.

On the pretext of taking her for a medical check-up, Hafiz kdinapped her on Wednesday and later, he, along with his accomplices, coaxed her to consume an overdose of sleeping pills, which apparently resulted in her death, the SSP said.

After committing the crime, the accused carried the body of deceased to the house of Mian Sohail in Dayalachak in Kathua and disposed it off the next day with the help of two other associates, he said.

The body was recovered and sent for autopsy, Goel said, adding that the exact cause of death would be established only after the result of the autopsy is obtained.
