Retrenched workers lathicharged; No injuries

: Around 90 persons, including some women of Association of Welfare of Retrenched Employees of Puducherry government were arrested today in front of the Assembly premises where they staged a picketing to insist on reinstatement in their posts

Police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse them as their numbers increased, but there were no injuries.

However the agitators reassembled outside the Assembly campus after which they were taken into custody.

Around 4500 employees, all daily wage labourers in PSUs and government departments, were retrenched in 2011 They were working in organisations like PASIC, PAPSCO, KVK and other public sector undertakings and also in some departments.
 

They urged the Chief Minister to ensure that orders are issued without delay to restore them in their posts.
