In a letter written to Parveen Vasisht, Headmaster of the school, Sukhpal Singh Khaira said, "it will be unfair, unjust to accept Rs 1 crore of hard earned money of the people of Punjab for a glorious, magnificent and well to do school like Sanawar...By accepting this money you would only be encroaching upon the legitimate rights of lakhs of underprivileged students of Punjab".

The Punjab government has given a sum of Rs 1 crore to Sanawar school from the funds meant for Punjab Nirman Programme on the occasion of school's 165th Founders Day.

The Lawerence School, Sanawar is the alma mater of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Khaira raised a hue and cry over donating this sum while alleging that it was unfair to donate money when the conditions of state-owned schools in the state was pathetic.
