RGCB Chief Controller K M Nair passes away

Chief Controller of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) K M Nair passed away at a private hospital here.

63-year-old Nair passed away at a private hospital at Kochi yesterday. The cremation will be held here on December 19, an RGCB press release said.

Nair spent nearly four decades in public service after joining the Intelligence Bureau in November 1974. He was then selected to the 1980 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise).

Prior to joining RGCB, Nair was first Chief Controller in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), being absorbed into ISRO in 2010 after he joined the VSSC as its Controller on deputation from the IRS in February 2006.
 

While serving as Assistant Collector of Customs, Airport, Thiruvananthapuram, he played a key role in developing Trivandrum airport into a leading international airport.

Nair has set up academies in Bangalore and Hyderabad and a Centre of Excellence in Faridabad as the Additional Director General, Southern Region, Chennai, in the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics. During this tenure, he was made Lead Trainer for the Ozone Depleting Substances Programme of the UNEP.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter and son.
