An adult male rhino was killed and its horn taken away by poachers today at Manas National Park (MNP) in Assam, park authorities said.

The carcass was recovered from a spot under Bhuyanpara Range of the Park contiguous with the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan along the international border.

The rhino was translocated from Pobitora Game Sanctuary in Morigaon district to MNP on January 17, 2011, the authorities said.

Incorporated as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 1985, the MNP has a Project Tiger Reserve, an Elephant Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve.
