The animal, which strayed to Rani Chapori in Sualkuchi from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary last Sunday was located last night, Deputy Commissioner S K Roy told PTI today.
The rhino, which was to be air-lifted to a safer place by helicopter, was seen moving last night, and was being guarded, he said.
He said despite good weather, the rhinoceros could be air-lifted only after the area dried up completely.
This was because there was a danger that the animal could run to the river, the level of which was high, after being tranquilised, Roy said.
The rhino's health had improved considerably and it was eating and responding well, he said.
The IAF helicopter, requisitioned by the state government to airlift the animal, was kept ready along with forest personnel.
The animal could be rescued within the next four or five days, he said.
