Rhino succumbs to injuries in Kaziranga

Park authorities said rhino was shot at and critically wounded by poachers at Agoratoli range of the Park and its horn was removed on October 13, Park authorities said.

So far 44 rhinos have died naturally or due to floods in Assam this year, while 19 have been killed by poachers at Kaziranga. Another panchyderm which had strayed out died in Nalbari district.

Meanwhile, patrolling has been intensified inside and around the Park against poachers for the security of rhinos and other animals there, the sources said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi this week handed Assam Forest Protection Force sophisticated self loading rifles to step up security arrangements.

 

Taking cognisance of media reports on poaching and killing of rhinos in Kaziranga and alleged encroachment of its land by illegal Bangladeshis, Gauhati High Court had suo moto filed a PIL on October 4 asking the central and Assam governments to file detailed affidavits on steps taken by them on the two issues.
