Rights workers beaten up for rescuing minor girls, 3 arrested

Three persons were arrested on charge of assaulting human rights activists who took initiative for rescuing and sending two minor married girls to a government home at Taherpur in Nadia district yesterday.

Ranaghat SDPO, Indranil Bose said, "We have initiated a case and arrested three persons."

The three were rounded up on charge of assaulting Purnima Debnath, Sanjay Debnath and Purnima's son Sunil - all associated with a human rights group.

The trio had saved two minor girls of the area from being tortured and threatened at gun point by their husbands and sent to a government home in Krishnanagar.
 

They were then thrashed by the parents of the girls who wanted them to return to their husbands against their wishes yesterday.

The human rights activists were admitted to Shaktinaga hospital in Krishnagar.

The three arrested were today produced in Ranaghat Court.
