The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD)today demanded immediate suspension of Maharashtra MP Gopal Shetty from the Lok Sabha for his controversial comments on farmers' suicide.

The party also threatened to launch a nationwide farmers march to Parliament if its demand is not met.

It has written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, demanding action against Shetty, who yesterday kicked up a controversy by attributing farmers' suicides to a "fashion" and "trend" to end lives.

Addressing its members protesting outside the office of the district officer, party in-charge of West Uttar Pradesh Raj Kumar Sanghwan claimed that the BJP MP's remark reflects his view, but also the BJP's.

"We won't tolerate this mockery of farmers misery. This BJP MP is a big insult to Parliament. We have written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker demanding termination of his membership," said Sanghwan.

He said that the MP's remark has added insult to injury, adding,"Today not only the farmers of Maharashtra are hurt by his comment but also farmers across the country.
