Parents of a 21-year-old youth, who died in a road accident involving a rashly driven truck, have been awarded a compensation of around Rs 15 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT Presiding Officer Kiran Bansal directed Reliance General Insurance Company Ld to pay compensation amount of Rs 14,69,144 to parents of Delhi resident Atul Sharma, who died after being hit by a truck in Noida in February 2012.

"From the statement of Ravindra Sharma (eye-witness) and in view of the record of the criminal case regarding accident, it is proved that the deceased sustained fatal injuries in the accident which occurred on February 16, 2012 due to rash and negligent driving of offending vehicle, driven by its driver," the tribunal said.

According to petition filed by Sharma's parents, on February 16, 2012 their son was going to Greater Noida on his motorcycle when a truck, being driven negligently and at a very high speed, came from behind and hit him.

As a result, Sharma fell down on the road and sustained grievous injuries. He was immediately taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

They claimed that Sharma was employed in a private firm and was earning Rs 16,000 per month.

The driver and the owner, however, denied the allegations made against them and stated that the accident occurred due to rash and negligent attitude of Sharma.
