A large stretch of a road in the heart of the city caved in this evening but owing to a public holiday because of Eid, there was not much chaos as a result, police said.

A crater of 8ft by 8ft appeared in the middle of the Old Post Office Street under the Hare Street Police Station area, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) MMIC Ratan Dey, who rushed to the area along with senior engineers said that it could be because of the collapse of pipeline of the age-old drainage network laid during the British-era.

"We are yet to ascertain what has actually gone wrong that led to the cavity. It can be because of the damage of a drain pipe which dated back to the British period," Roy said.

"Our engineers have already started working on this. I am expecting that once the actual cause is found out we will work the whole night and repair the portion of the road," he said.
