A group of unidentified persons looted passengers of New Delhi-Coimbatore Kongu Express after forcing the train to halt by throwing stones in a forested area near the Itarsi junction late last night.

The miscreants pelted stones at the train near Pola Patthar station, forcing it to slow down. Some of them then boarded it as it entered a forested stretch and pulled the chain, said R L Uikey, the in-charge of Government Railway Police post at Betul station.

As the train came to a halt, they looted passengers in the S-6 and S-7 coaches, decamped with ornaments, mobile phones and other valuables worth Rs 65,000, said Uikey.

The passengers reported the robbery when the train reached Betul at around 2 am. Further probe is on.
