A group of five to eight persons made a vain bid to commit robbery at a private finance firm's office here today, police said.

The persons entered the office in Mailardevpally area at around 10 am, brandished knives and guns and started threatening the cashier and other staff, they said.

After the staff raised a hue and cry and switched on the burglary alarm, members of the public rushed to their rescue. Noticing a large number of people gathering at the office, the robbers lost their nerve and fled the scene, said Mailardevpally Police Station Inspector P Jagadeeshwar.

The police have formed special teams to nab the robbers.

The police, who scanned the CCTV footage, found that at least four of them entered the office premises and threatened the staff at gunpoint, he said.
