Sixteen members of two families were injured, two of them seriously, when robbers attacked two village camps here midnight last night, police said.

The robbers stormed the camps located near villages Mothanwala and Maqusudan and decamped with gold ornaments and cash, SSP Inderjit Singh said.

The injured, mostly women and children, were admitted to various hospitals, he said.

Two of the seriously injured were rushed to Jalandhar, the SSP said.

Armed with lethal weapons, the robbers, numbering 15, attacked the two deras between 11 pm and 1.30 am, he said.

They also thrashed some labourers in village Chak Kotala before striking at the two camps.

Senior police officers visited the scene and met the injured.

The Punjab Congress said the attacks on the two camps were the direct fallout of "politicisation" of the police by the SAD-BJP government.

They demanded action against the police officers for their alleged inaction.
