Actor Robert Redford's publicist Cindy Berger has confirmed the veteran is alive and well after a hoax news report of his death circulated rapidly on Twitter on New Year's Eve.

Berger said the 79-year-old is home and very much alive, calling the reports of his death "sick hoax," reported Aceshowbiz.

"#RIPRobertRedford" was briefly trending on December 31 after report surfaced on Twitter that the "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid" actor had died.

A fake Twitter account purporting to be Britain's Sky News had tweeted out the fake news of Redford's death.

Berger was quick to control the situation, saying "This is a sick hoax. I just spoke to him and there is no truth to this whatsoever." She said the actor was home and fine, adding, "Any rumour to Robert Redford's passing is completely not true."

Redford, who doesn't have Twitter or Instagram accounts, has not commented on his death report.

The fake Twitter account that sparked the hoax has in the past reportedly spread other false reports about celebrity deaths, including that of actor John Travolta. The account has since been suspended by Twitter.
