India has the peacock, America has the bald eagle and now Britain has the robin.

The red-breasted bird has topped a poll of more than 200,000 people to choose the UK's first national bird, winning a landslide victory.

The bird received 34 per cent of votes, followed by the barn owl, which received 12 per cent, and the blackbird, 11 per cent.

More than 224,000 people voted online, at ballot boxes in schools and by post in the poll, which began in March.

Bird expert David Lindo -- who launched the campaign -- said the result was "fitting", as the robin was Britain's most familiar bird.

"What has become the UK's biggest ever nature vote has reminded the British people how much they love the nature around us," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Lindo said he would speak to the government to ask for the winner to be officially recognised as Britain's national bird.

If the government agrees the robin should represent the UK, it would join the ranks of other national birds from around the world with the United States boasting of the bald eagle as its national bird while the colourful Indian peacock being the national bird of India since 1963.

In Australia, the emu appears on the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, along with the kangaroo.

Lindo began the project last year when he realised Britain did not have a national bird, unlike countries such as India, France and Japan.

The red-breasted creature has long been a part of Britain's cultural tapestry, most notably with its image adorning Christmas decorations every year.

It was selected with nine others from a list of 60 birds in a preliminary vote and a ballot for the final 10 opened to the British public in March. Other contenders included the wren, the kingfisher and the puffin.

A separate vote for children shored up the robin's victory, with it being declared the winner with 20 per cent of the vote in a ballot involving more than 11,000 young people.
