Condemning the Naxal attack on Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh's south Bastar region, Madhya Pradesh Assembly speaker Ishwardas Rohani said the Centre and the state should take a decisive action to punish those responsible.

"The attack on Congress leaders which resulted in the death of many prominent leaders and injuries to several others is very unfortunate and highly deplorable," Rohani told PTI.

He demanded that Centre and the state take a joint action, as this was an attack on the Indian democratic system.

"Only in this system even poorest of the poor can approach the Prime Minister....The attack was an attempt to weaken this democratic structure," Rohani said.

On May 25, Maoists ambushed a convoy of Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh killing 27 people including PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, Congress leader Mahendra Karma and former MLA Uday Mudliyar and injuring 32 others, including former Union Minister V C Shukla.
