The root canal treatment, used to preserve and treat natural teeth for the last 100 years, has been over 90 per cent successful in the last 10 years, experts noted at a day-long workshop here Tuesday.
The dental wing of King George's Medical University (KGMU) has claimed to have set a unique world record by conducting root canal treatment of 163 patients on a day, at a single centre and in one sitting.
The success of the root canal treatment is attributed mainly to the use of microscopes, the experts said at the workshop organised by the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics at the KGMU.
During the workshop 'Magnification and Beyond', lectures and training to learn the art of root canal treatment using a high powered microscope were conducted by Dr Alfredo Iandolo, an expert from Italy.
The aim of the event was to impart training to UG and PG students from the various parts of Uttar Pradesh in the use of microscopes in endodontics.
"The purpose is that maximum students in the next few years can be trained for this procedure," said Prof AP Tikku, HOD KGMU dental department and organising chairman.
Dr Tikku stressed on the need for propagating awareness for the patients to conserve their natural teeth and not get their teeth unnecessarily extracted and replaced by implants.
