Presenting the budget, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said steps will be taken for rationalisation of water distribution system programme for revamping of existing water supply, transmission and distribution networks under PPP.

Delhi Jal Board will take up selected projects, she said.

Dikshit proposed a plan outlay of Rs 1800 crore for the water supply and sanitation sector in 2012-2013. This is 12 per cent of the total plan outlay and 15 percent higher than the previous year.

She also said that her government has approved the project of DJB for renovation of Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant being the first Water Treatment Plant of the city to get External Aid with technical support and funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with an investment of more than Rs. 2000 crore.

Dikshit expected on completion of the project, the water supply position will improve substantially.

Noting that efforts were on to resolve inter-state issues involved in the completion of the pucca channel from Munak to Haiderpur, she said work for construction of two new Water Treatment Plants at Dwarka and Okhla is at the stage of completion.

"On completion of the pucca parallel channel, the raw water saved will be made available to these new water treatment plants so as to improve the water supply position in Dwarka and other South Delhi localities," she said.

Expressing concerns over reduction in non-revenue water, the government came out with one of the major programmes to convert all non-metered water connections to metered connections.

Earlier, out of the first lot of 2.5 lakh water meters, 2 lakh water meters have been procured and installed and action to procure 8 lakh more water meters has been initiated. The selected firms will supply and maintain the water meters for seven years.
