The Uttar Pradesh Trade Tax Department has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Patanjali Yoga Peeth for allegedly concealing tax on sale of goods here.

The fine was slapped yesterday after Joint Commissioner P N Pandey assessed the tax at Rs ten lakh seventy thousand on the ayurvedic goods that were being sold here recently instead of Assam for where the sales permit was granted, Assistant Commissioner of trade tax Sanjay Singh said.

A fortnight ago, a truck loaded with ayurvedic medicines and goods of the Patanjali brand, owned by the trust run by yoga guru Ramdev, was intercepted by department officials and seized following which the action has been taken, he said.
